Wild Coast’s Hollywood all set to hide in the bush
7/03/2008

CONSTRUCTION on the Transkei set for the film Amelia, starring Richard Gere and Hilary Swank, is well
under way.
The movie, which will trace the life of legendary American pilot Amelia Earhart, will be partly shot in
the hills near Trennerys Hotel.
This week the Daily Dispatch visited the site, which falls on tribal land, and found a team of around
eight people constructing three wooden structures. Two resembled log cabins and the third, a
smaller structure, was no bigger than a wooden shed.
When the newspaper enquired about taking photographs on the site, an official warned that legal
action would be taken. The Dispatch then moved off site and snapped a picture from a distance.
That the film is being shot in the area is common knowledge among locals, although people
approached for comment asked to remain anonymous or referred queries to Genevieve Hofmeyer, a
producer for Cape Town-based production company Moonlighting. Efforts to reach Hofmeyer proved
fruitless.
One reason given for the secrecy surrounding the project was the concern that if it received too
much publicity it could attract unwanted attention, and plans to film it at Trennerys would be
abandoned in favour of another location.
As a film of this nature will undoubtedly inject a significant amount of money into the area and create
employment, local business owners are keen to see it go ahead.
Both Trennerys and the nearby Seagulls hotels are said to be fully booked by cast and crew for the
duration of the shoot.
Greg Woodside, manager of Trennerys Hotel, said he knew very little about the shooting schedule.
“We’re as much in the dark about what’s going on as you are,” he said.
Last Saturday the Dispatch reported that the Hollywood stars were expected in the country in two
weeks’ time, although this has not yet been confirmed. - By ANDREW STONE

On Location With Brooklyn’s Finest, Bodega Edition
July 4th, 2008
Yesterday we posted pictures of a scene being shot for Brooklyn’s
Finest, of Richard Gere’s cop hearing a gunshot and running into
a bodega. After several takes of that shot, they then shot the scene
from inside the bodega, looking out to where Mr. Gere’s
character was drinking a bottle of water before the gunshot.
During our time on the set, we saw a scene being shot from a
couple of different viewpoints. Mr. Gere’s character, standing near
his cruiser, hears a gunshot from inside a bodega and runs into the
building.

An Officer and a Gentleman!
HOLLYWOOD heartthrob he may be but Richard Gere
showed he really can play the tough guy when a
fellow actor threw a punch at him.

The star of Pretty Woman and An Officer And A
Gentleman grabbed the man in a headlock as they
were filming on the mean streets of New York.

As soon as the director of Brooklyn’s Finest shouted
“Cut!” Richard made up for his overzealous acting
with a smile and a manly hug for his opponent in the
screen scuffle, proving that he’s still an old softie at
heart.

Richard, 58, plays police officer Eddie Dugan in the film
due for release next year, which also stars Ethan
Hawke and Wesley Snipes.

RICHARD GERE, LANCIA DELTA, AND A FREE TIBET?  -  The Fiat Group surfs the Olympics Wave July 8, 2008
As the Olympic Games in China approach (08/08/08, for those of you who’ve forgotten), and the number of Free Tibet protests increase, Fiat
(parent company of the brand Lancia), with the help of Marcel Los Angeles, created a new TV ad Lancia Delta that uses the controversial image
of Richard Gere.
In the ad, we follow the movie star as he drives his new car out of the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. We are still with him as he drives right onto
the snowy Himalayas, surrounded by prayer wheels and Buddhist monks. Could it really be? Can the Lancia Delta make us better world
citizens?

It is clear that using such a strong reference will spark debate between the pro-Tibet camp and the others. But will using one of today’s hot
topics create buzz for the brand?

Is Fiat looking to close their doors on the Chinese market? Or are they trying to use their brand to bring together the Free Tibet camp for a bit of
community building? This advertising is using René Girard’s notion of the “scapegoat” for the creation of a social link that pits one side against
the other. It’s all one big contradiction: “the power to be different.” But the question is: Are you really different if you buy that car…?

What is more, the story doesn’t end here. The Italian company “reiterates its neutrality in connection with any political matter, be it on a national
or international basis. […] The Fiat Group sincerely apologizes to the Government of the People’s Republic of China and to the Chinese people.”

Those words are a bit hard to believe. It’s hard to imagine that this campaign was done in complete innocence. This is certainly a story to follow!
